Brilliant concept, well made, but poorly engineered joist straddle.

My daughter had just purchased a house with many 16 foot 1×4’s that I had to remove, along with the frame, to have a sewer line replaced. The plumbers went waaayyy over on time (by 5 weeks) and abused the planks in the process. Many had serious curves when the time came to reattach them. I had used crowbars and wedges in the past to help straighten out curves and was very excited to be able to use these. Unfortunately, however, a few minor engineering or manufacturing errors prevented them from being all that useful. Firstly, these things look like a work of art. The metal is thick and sturdy and the bright yellow finish is gorgeous. Unfortunately, the anchoring mechanism drags down the performance of the tool. The joist stop wheel is scored so that it grips the wood tightly when contact is made. The lock block is made of plastic and is designed to give a bit as leverage is applied before locking up. Here is where the rub (pun intended) appears – the beginning interval between the stop and lock is too small for standard 2-bys, so the plate is at too great and angle by the time the stop grips the joist thus loosing a considerably portion of gap than can be closed. I cannot get the tool in place without loosening the stop lock to the next interval which creates the void that causes angle. I ended up using shims to fit the tool before trying to bend the boards back into alignment and it worked fine. I don’t feel one should have to do this at this price and it is somewhat crushing to see such a beautiful tool under-perform like that. I think a metal lock with a continuous slide (not notched) would improve the beginning fit and greatly improve the performance of the tool. The notches/plastic stub design is too limiting. It is supposed to adjust in 10% increments, if so, the stops should be at 1.5/1.65/1.82/1.99/2.19/2.41/2.66/2.92 or 8 different stop notches between 1.5 and 3 inches. There are only 5 intervals beginning at x.x (marked 1.5) and x.x (marked 3.0). Still, with a proper wedge, these really outperform crowbars, but at their price, I don’t think any ’tinkering’ should be necessary.PRECISE RATING: 3 (decent at doing what I need, would probably do further research, but then perhaps buy again)MOST INFLUENTIAL RATING CONSIDERATION: price AND performanceRECOMMENDATION: If you are the neighborhood favor-man and help with a lot of decks, these may be useful for you, especially with the quality of lumber these days. However, for the price currently quoted, I cannot recommend them. I think #1 – they should improve the stop-lock, #2 – they should sell them individually (I only needed more than one a couple of times to achieve the desired results) and #3 reduce the price to about $40 ea. Great tools to straighten boards.
This is one of the tools that entirely changes how I work. It makes installing decking significantly easier and faster, producing more consistent results. I wish some parts were metal instead of plastic, but it seems to hold up fine for now. It’s simple to set up, and I got the hang of it on my first board. If you have the budget, I still think it’s better to support the original, but these are a good alternative that does the job.
