Easy replacement for 50+ year old Kohler bath faucets.
Thanks to Danco customer service for steering me to this item for my very old (50+ yrs.) Kohler faucets. (BTW, Danco says that this kit is an Amazon exclusive) I have included side-by-side photos of the old and new faucets installed and uninstalled. The socket wrench included in the kit was a little too short–the old stem was long enough that the hole in the end was obstructed by the end of the stem. Normally, I insert a screw driver through the end holes to turn the socket. I tried a crescent wrench, which slipped off the flats on the socket. However, a pipe wrench solved the problem with minimal effort required. The instructions with the kit are good. There is one difference in operation between the new and old faucets. The old hot and cold valves rotated in opposite directions to open and close. With this kit, the hot and cold are both ccw to open and cw to close.Update to the above. The socket supplied with the kit worked on one of the two valves that I replaced, but not the other. The socket has two sizes: 29/32-inch on one end, and 31/32-inch on the other. Since the smaller would not go over the nut, I used the 31/32-inch, although the fit was a little loose. On the second valve, the socket slipped, riding over the points on the nut. I measured the previously removed valve and it was exactly 15/16-in. If this happens to you, I recommend the “Sunex 230xd 1/2-inch Drive 15/16-inch Extra Deep Socket”. This fits perfectly, but you will need a 1/2-inch socket drive. If you replace the old valve seat, get the “Superior Tool 03860 6-Step Faucet Seat Wrench”. It is cheap and it works on these old Kohler shower valves.

If your shower has these old fashion faucets, you can find the valves at a hardware store, but you will never find the escutcheons and handles anywhere but here. They look and work fantastic. Get the old stem seats out with a quarter inch drive extension on a quarter inch ratchet. The extension fits the old and new seats perfectly. There is no need to buy a seat wrench.

Manage your expectations
I bought this kid to fix a leaking shower and maybe refresh the look of our existing shower hardware. All in all, the parts appear to match the look of the original Kohler hardware. The kit did indeed stop the leak in the shower. But I do not like the way it feels and I don’t like how difficult it is to get my preferred water temperature. I also have a problem with the knobs turning the same direction for on and off. I like them to be opposite or each other (outward for on, inward for off).Pros: The kit comes with most of the things you need to replace your stems.The chrome looks nice.This kit will stop most leaks with proper installation.Cons: I really don’t like the stems. The stems feel loose when on. There is a lot of play in just how they move. This is attributed to the way the stems were made. You can kind of see the comparison of an old genuine Kohler threads versus the new Danco threads that causes this play.Additionally, these stems are what I would call sensitive. It is difficult to get the water temperature right for your preference. The slightest turn and it gets too hot or too cold by a lot.Also, these are both hot water stems. They both turn lefty loosey for on, righty righty for off. The Amazon description says that there is a hot and a cold, but these are the same and they turn the same direction.This kit does not come with a seat wrench. You absolutely need to replace your faucet seat when you replace your stems, so this is a tool that you’ll need to pick up at a hardware store for between $10 to $20Since the stems are the largest contributor to the price point of this, I’m going to return this kit and by genuine parts instead.
